Description

Numbers 20 and 21 are two terraced houses built around 1760, with some later alterations. They feature darkened brick with a stucco ground floor and a stone cornice at the third floor level. The buildings rise to four storeys and include basements. Between the two houses, there is an original lead rainwater head and pipe. Number 21 has three windows and a wooden doorcase with engaged Doric columns that support an entablature, along with panelled reveals and a panelled door. The recessed sash windows have gauged brick flat arches, and the first floor features a continuous cast-iron balcony. The second floor has architraved windows, and the parapet has been restored.

The interior has not been inspected but is noted to retain an original staircase and other features. The attached cast-iron railings from the 19th century are present in front of the properties. Number 22, adjacent to these houses, has two windows and a five-window return (two of which are blind) facing Barter Street. It has rusticated quoins and a 20th-century reproduction of an early 19th-century shop window. The recessed sash windows on the first floor also have gauged brick flat arches, and the third floor and parapet have been restored using multi-coloured stock bricks. The return to Barter Street features plain bands at the first and second floors, with a centre bay projection that includes a round-headed window on the first floor and a former entrance below, flanked by pilasters and supporting a console bracketed canopy, which has been altered for use as a window. A 20th-century glazed entrance door is located to the left, and the parapet is present. The interior of Number 22 has not been inspected, and it also has attached cast-iron railings with urn finials.
