Description

This gas street light, located outside 16 Great College Street, consists of an 1830s cast iron column and a lantern likely dating from around 1930. The lamp post has a tapering, fluted column with a reeded base that features plaques bearing the numbers 6514 and the letters “St IEW”, as well as the manufacturer's name, PEARSE. The Rochester-type lantern is topped with a circular copper drum and rain-shield, above an inverted six-mantle burner within a teardrop-shaped glass enclosure that includes a drainage hole and an enamelled steel reflector. The lantern is suspended in an iron cradle with decorative ironwork scrolls, characteristic of Rochester lanterns manufactured between the wars. The lantern’s construction utilises cast iron, spun copper, enamelled steel and glass.
