Description
The lamp post outside 20 Great College Street is a gas street light dating from 1910, featuring an Eddystone column and a Rochester-type lantern made by William Sugg and Company, likely around 1930.
The lamp post is made of cast iron and has a glazed lantern constructed from iron, spun copper, and enamelled steel. It consists of a tapering, fluted Eddystone column topped with an upright Rochester lantern. The base of the column displays the Westminster City Council crest on one side and the royal cypher G V R along with the date 1910 on the other side. The lantern includes a circular drum and rain-shield made of copper, positioned above an inverted, six-mantle burner enclosed in teardrop-shaped glass with a drainage hole at the base. An enamelled steel reflector bears the lettering ‘SUGG GAS LIGHT’. This entire assembly is held in place by an iron cradle with two curved uprights extending from the clock box, although some original decorative ironwork scrolls typical of inter-war Rochester lanterns have been lost.
