Description
The lamp post outside 22 Great College Street is a gas street light that is believed to date from the late 19th century. It features a Brompton-type column with a later extension shaft and a Rochester-type lantern made by William Sugg and Company, likely around 1930.
The lamp post is made of cast iron and has a glazed lantern constructed from iron, spun copper, and enamelled steel. It has a tapering Brompton column adorned with acanthus leaves at both the base and top, topped with an extension shaft and an upright Rochester lantern. The square base of the column displays an illegible oval plaque number on one side. The lantern includes a circular drum and rain-shield made of copper, positioned above an inverted, six-mantle burner encased in teardrop-shaped glass with a drainage hole at the base. It also features an enamelled steel reflector marked with the lettering ‘SUGG GAS LIGHT’. This entire assembly is held in place by an iron cradle with two curved uprights extending from the clock box, which still retain much of their original decorative ironwork scrolls, characteristic of inter-war Rochester lanterns.
