Description

Dean's Yard is the headmaster's house for Westminster School, rebuilt in the late 18th century from monastic-school buildings. It is constructed of yellow stock brick and features a slate roof. The building has three storeys, a basement, and a dormered attic, with a facade that is four windows wide. There are two blind windows flanking a left-hand tripartite window. The entrance is located to the left and includes a panelled door with blind side lights, framed by architrave pilaster strips topped with roundel capping blocks. Above the door is a moulded cornice and a semicircular fanlight with a delicate radial glazing pattern, along with a small adjoining doorway that also has a fanlight. The windows are recessed glazing bar sashes set under flat gauged arches with stone sills. A parapet with stone coping crowns the structure. A cast iron balcony with a geometric pattern spans the first floor, while cast iron area railings with urn finials, flanking lamp brackets, and link extinguishers enhance the exterior. Inside, the building retains much of its original mouldings and cornices, as well as a notable geometric staircase with a wrought iron balustrade.
