Description
The lamp post outside 4 Tufton Street is a gas street light, likely dating from the late 19th century, featuring a Brompton-type column with a later extension shaft and a Windsor-type lantern, probably added in the early 20th century.
It is made of cast iron with a glazed lantern constructed from iron, spun copper, and enamelled steel. The lamp post has a tapering Brompton column adorned with acanthus leaves at both the base and top, and it is topped with an extension shaft and a Windsor lantern. The lantern is square-shaped, featuring tapered and curved glazing panels with metal glazing bars, and is finished with a decorative circular ogee finial on the tent. One of the lantern panels is an enamelled reflector that has been blanked off to direct light forward. The square base of the column displays an oval plaque numbered 8030 on one side. Inside the lamp, there is a six-mantle inverted burner equipped with a Horstmann 14-day clockwork time controller and a steel reflector. The lantern is mounted on a four-legged frog that is attached to the collar of the column.
