Description
The Friary is a large 18th-century house that now serves as the Headmaster's House of Richmond School. It stands three storeys tall and is currently roughcast with a new roof. The building features seven windows with hung sashes that include glazing bars. A moulded stone eaves cornice adds to its architectural detail. The main entrance is located at the extreme left and is framed by a painted stone case with reeded pilasters that form brackets, a reeded frieze, and a cornice with small modillions. Above the door is a semi-circular radiating fanlight. There is also a plain doorway on the side elevation. An extension added in 1898 on the right side includes a canted bay window on the ground floor, while a modern extension has been added to the rear. The structure incorporates masonry from the 16th century and older. The Friary, along with Grey Friars Tower, gates, gate piers, walling, and No. 4 (Friary Lodge), forms a group.
