Description
The lamp post outside 12 Cowley Street is a gas street light that likely dates from the late 19th century. It features an ornate cast iron column with acanthus leaves at the base and floral mouldings. There is a later extension shaft topped with a Rochester-type lantern made by William Sugg and Company, probably around 1930.
The lamp post has a tapered squared base with an oval plaque displaying the number 6523 on one side and "LCC" for London County Council on the other. The lantern includes a circular drum and rain-shield made of copper, above an inverted six-mantle burner encased in a teardrop-shaped glass enclosure that has a drainage hole at its base. An enamelled steel reflector is inscribed with the lettering "SUGG GAS LIGHT." This entire assembly is held in place by an iron cradle with two curved uprights that feature original decorative ironwork scrolls, characteristic of inter-war Rochester lanterns.
