Description
The lamp post outside 1 Cowley Street is a gas street light that features a Brompton-type column, likely dating from the late 19th century, and a Rochester-type lantern made by Sugg Lighting Limited in the later 20th century.
The lamp post is made of cast iron and has a glazed lantern constructed from iron, spun copper, and enamelled steel. It consists of a tapering Brompton column adorned with acanthus leaves at both the base and top, which is topped with an extension shaft and an upright Rochester lantern. The lantern includes a circular drum and rain-shield above an inverted, six-mantle burner enclosed in teardrop-shaped glass with a drainage hole at the base. The entire assembly is held in place by an iron cradle with two curved stabilising uprights extending from the clock box.
