Description
The lamp post outside 22 Gayfere Street is a gas street light that is believed to date from the late 19th century. It features a Brompton-type column with a later extension shaft and a Rochester-type lantern made by Sugg Lighting Limited in the late 20th century.
The lamp post is made of cast iron and has a glazed lantern constructed from iron, spun copper, and enamelled steel. It consists of a tapering Brompton column adorned with acanthus leaves at both the base and top, leading up to the Upright Rochester lantern. The replacement lantern has a circular drum with a rain-shield above an inverted, six-mantle burner, which is enclosed in a teardrop-shaped glass casing that includes a drainage hole at the base. The entire assembly is held in place by an iron cradle with two curved stabilising uprights extending from the clock box.
