Description
Nos. 1 and 2 Smith Square are a pair of terrace houses built in 1726 as part of Sir James Smith's development of the square. They were largely rebuilt after sustaining damage during the war. The houses are constructed of brown brick with red brick dressings and feature tiled roofs. They stand three storeys high, with basements and dormered mansards, each having three windows across the front. The entrances have panelled doors with cornice hoods on either side. The windows are recessed glazing bar sashes set under flat gauged arches, with stuccoed reveals. There is a brick plat band above the ground floor and a parapet with coping. Iron area railings complete the exterior. This pair of houses is part of an exceptionally well-preserved early 18th-century enclave that includes Lord North Street and Barton and Cowley Streets.
