Description

Gayfere Lodge is a terraced town house dating from around 1930, designed by Oliver Hill. It is located in Gayfere Street, City of Westminster, and incorporates No. 40 Smith Square. The building exhibits a sophisticated neo-Georgian style, described as "beau-monde," and is constructed from red brick with Portland stone dressings and a tiled roof. It is three storeys high and features two tiers of attic dormers within a steeply pitched roof. The symmetrical design comprises a five-window "centre," a recessed entrance bay to the left for No. 40, and a three-window wing to the right for No. 12. The central entrance to No. 12 is architraved with a cornice on consoles. The entrance to No. 40 Smith Square has a similar doorway, both with pedimented windows above; the window above No. 40 has a "pergola" balcony. The windows are glazing bar sash windows, recessed and set beneath flat, gauged brick arches with keystones. The north wing incorporates narrow, segmental arched windows. Architectural details include a stone plinth, a sill band on the first floor, a stone cornice, a brick parapet under the eaves and a central pediment.
