Description
The lamp post outside Tufton Court is a gas street light that is believed to date from the late 19th century. It features a Brompton-type column and a Rochester-type lantern made by William Sugg & Company, likely around 1930.
The lamp post is made of cast iron and has a glazed lantern constructed from iron, spun copper, and enamelled steel. The design includes a tapering Brompton column adorned with acanthus leaves at both the base and top, and it is topped with an extension shaft and an upright Rochester lantern. The square base of the column tapers and has an oval plaque with the number 6507.
The lantern itself consists of a circular drum and rain-shield made of copper, positioned above an inverted six-mantle burner enclosed in teardrop-shaped glass, which has a drainage hole at its base. It also features an enamelled steel reflector that is marked with the lettering ‘SUGG GAS LAMP’. This entire assembly is held in place by an iron cradle with two curved uprights extending from the clock box. These uprights still display some of their original decorative ironwork scrolls, characteristic of inter-war Rochester lanterns.
