Description
The lamp post outside 15-16 Lord North Street is a gas street light of the Brompton type, erected by 1904. It features a later extension shaft and a Rochester-type lantern made by William Sugg and Company, likely around 1930.
The lamp post is made of cast iron and includes a glazed lantern constructed from iron, spun copper, and enamelled steel. It has a tapering Brompton column adorned with acanthus leaves at both the base and top. The column's square base displays an oval plaque numbered 6525. The lantern consists of a circular drum and rain-shield made of copper, positioned above an inverted six-mantle burner encased in teardrop-shaped glass with a drainage hole at the base. An enamelled steel reflector bears the lettering ‘SUGG GAS LIGHT’. This entire assembly is held in place by an iron cradle supported by two curved uprights that extend from the clock box, which still feature some original decorative ironwork scrolls typical of inter-war Rochester lanterns.
