Description

This gas street light is located at the corner of 3 Great College Street and 5 Little College Street. It features a 1910 Eddystone column with a Rochester-type lantern, likely manufactured by William Sugg and Company around 1930.

The lamp post is made of cast iron and includes a glazed lantern constructed from iron, spun copper, and enamelled steel. The design consists of a tapering, fluted Eddystone column topped with an upright Rochester lantern. The base of the column displays the Westminster City Council crest on one side, and on the other side, it features the royal cypher G V R along with the date 1910.

The lantern itself has a circular drum and rain-shield made of copper, positioned above an inverted, six-mantle burner encased in a teardrop-shaped glass enclosure that includes a drainage hole at its base. An enamelled steel reflector bears the lettering ‘SUGG’. This entire assembly is held in place by an iron cradle with two curved uprights extending from the clock box. However, these uprights have lost some of their original decorative ironwork scrolls, which are typically found on inter-war Rochester lanterns.
