Description
Abbey (Canons') Garden is a former canon's house that has been converted into offices. It was built in 1882 by architect J.L. Pearson. The building is constructed of red brick with extensive stone dressings and features slate roofs, showcasing a restrained Tudor-Gothic style. It has two storeys and a basement, with attics beneath gabled roofs. The north and south fronts each have three windows, with the more elaborate north front facing the garden. The outer window bays are advanced and gabled.
The central entrance features a four-centred arched doorway with moulded jambs and a drip mould. The windows are stone mullioned and transomed, with iron frames and cusped arches under squared heads, spanning the full width of the advanced gabled bays. The stone dressings rise at the angles, complemented by weathered sill courses and flush stone bands, and the gables are stone-coped. There are external chimney stacks on the flanks and twin chimney stacks on the central ridge, linked by a stone bridge-capping with blank tracery. The rear south elevation is plainer but similar, located behind the Precinct wall and overlooking Great College Street.
