Description

Lock Cottage is an early 19th-century building with 20th-century alterations, located at the top lock of the Hertford Union Canal. It is constructed of stock brick and features a hipped concrete tile roof with two lateral wall stacks. The cottage is two storeys high and has a symmetrical south front with three bays. The central round-arched doorway is accompanied by a 20th-century open porch and is flanked by two single 4-pane sash windows. Above the doorway, there is a blocked central window, also flanked by two 4-pane sashes. All the windows have flat arches. There is an early 20th-century single-storey brick extension with a flat roof at the south-east corner. The Hertford Union Canal, which connects the Regent's Canal to the River Lea Navigation, was opened in 1830.
