Description
Leighton Lock Cottage is a lock cottage built in the early 19th century, with later additions, for the Grand Junction Canal Company. It is constructed of painted brick and has an L-shaped plan. The roof is hipped and covered with slate, featuring overhanging eaves, a ridge stack, and a lateral wall stack. The building is two storeys high with a symmetrical front that has three bays. The central doorway contains a 20th-century door and is flanked by single glazing bar sash windows. Above the doorway, there is a range of three similar windows. All openings feature flat, rubbed brick arches, and the window sills are supported by two brackets each. The elevation facing the lock has four similar windows and includes a lean-to porch with a 20th-century door. Attached to the lean-to is a single-storey office made of painted brick, topped with a pyramidal slate roof. This office has a single tall stack and one glazing bar sash window with a flat arch facing the lock.
