Description
Lock Cottage, situated at Lock 58 of the Tardebigge Flight on the Worcester and Birmingham Canal, dates from 1812-13, with substantial rebuilding in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of brick with plain tile hipped roofs, featuring a lateral stack and a ridge stack. It has a dog-toothed eaves cornice and an L-shaped plan. The two-storey, four-bay cottage’s canal-facing elevation has a central doorway with a lean-to porch. To the left and right of the doorway are single windows with cambered arches. A further doorway with a cambered arch is positioned to the right. Above, there are three windows, with a narrow central casement window and, to the left and right, 20th-century 12-light, top-hung sash windows, all with cambered arches. A single-storey, pitched-roof extension adjoins the cottage to the left, likely originally serving as a stable. The cottage retains group value alongside several other listed features associated with the canal, including Lock 58, a canal bridge approximately 100 metres west-southwest of Lock 58, workshops approximately 75 metres southeast of Tardebigge Tunnel, and the south portal of Tardebigge Tunnel.
