Description
The Hackney Wick Great War Memorial stands in the north-eastern corner of Victoria Park, a Registered Historic Park and Garden. Constructed of Cornish granite, the memorial dates to the aftermath of the First World War (1914-1919). It takes the form of a tapering obelisk set upon a square plinth, the obelisk and plinth rising from a two-stepped base. The base measures just over one metre square, and the memorial is approximately 3.5 metres in height. Iron railings, approximately one metre high and set 40 centimetres from the memorial, surround it.
The names and units of the fallen are inscribed on all four sides of the plinth and on two sides of the stepped base. One side, facing east, reads "TO THE MEMORY OF/ HACKNEY WICK MEN/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919," followed by the names of 50 men - 40 on the plinth and 10 on the base. The north side of the plinth bears the names of 55 men, with an additional eight on the base. The south side lists 54 men, with a further 54 names inscribed on the west side. In total, the memorial commemorates 221 men from Hackney Wick.
