Description

The alcove from Old London Bridge is a Grade II listed stone structure located in Victoria Park, which opened in 1845. It is part of the remodelling of Old London Bridge carried out by Sir Robert Taylor and George Dance between 1758 and 1762, and was relocated to its current site in 1860. The alcove is made from dressed and tooled Portland stone and features a semi-circular plan with an arched hood that has moulded imposts, a string course, and a keystone. Engaged balusters with a projecting moulding flank the opening. An inscription on the rear states that the alcove was presented to Her Majesty by Benjamin Dixon, Esquire, J.P., for public use and was placed here by order of the Right Honourable W. Cowper, the First Commissioner of Her Majesty's Works and Public Buildings in 1860. This alcove is one of a pair relocated to Victoria Park and has a significant history. The original Old London Bridge was replaced between 1823 and 1831 by a new bridge designed by John Rennie, making these alcoves notable remnants of an important early Neoclassical monument in London.
