Description

Numbers 223-233 and the attached handrails to numbers 225, 231, and 233 form a terrace of six houses dating from the early or mid-19th century. The houses are built of brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with some double and triple headers, and have a stucco ground floor treated as banded rustication, along with stucco dressings. The roofs are parapeted. Each house has three storeys over a basement and two windows per facade. All entrances are accessed via steps leading to flat-arched doorways with overlights, each set within a Tuscan aedicule porch. The ground-floor windows are round-arched, with the exception of number 235, which is boarded over. The upper-floor windows are flat-arched with gauged brick surrounds. Original 6x6 sash windows remain in numbers 223, 229-233, with Gothic glazing in 229-233. Number 223 has 2x2 sashes with margin lights to the first floor and 1x1 sashes with margin lights to the second floor. The first and second-floor windows of numbers 225-231 have been rebuilt to an original 6x6 sash design. Party wall stacks are present. The entrances to the end units, numbers 223 and 233, are set within single-storey porches to the side. The front wall of number 223 has been heavily rebuilt and the upper reaches of the second-floor exterior wall have been rebuilt in places. The interior was not inspected. Remnants of the original handrails remain at the entrances of numbers 225, 231, and 233. These houses form a group with numbers 235 and 237-241.
