Description

Numbers 15-25 Portland Place comprise a terrace of houses dating to circa 1826, designed by Charles Augustin Busby as part of a larger development and similar in style to numbers 1-11 Portland Place. The houses are constructed of stucco over brick in Flemish bond, with artificial stone detailing. Roofs to numbers 16-17, 19-20, 22-23, and 25 are covered in slate, while the others have roofs obscured by a blocking course.

The terrace has a varied arrangement, with numbers 15, 18, 21, and 24 being three storeys and an attic over a basement, each with three windows. Numbers 18, 21 and 24 feature round-arched entrances with decorative glazing to the fanlights (numbers 18 and 21), while numbers 15 and 16 have been combined into a single flat-arched entry. Ground-floor windows of the porticoed bays are also round-arched. The remaining ground-floor entrances are flat-arched with overlight glazing of original design to numbers 19-20 and 22-23. Balconies with cast-iron railings and brackets to French doors are present on the first floors of numbers 16-17, 19-20, 22-23, and 25, with balconettes to the others. The French doors to number 17 have architraves. Number 25 has been resurfaced with cement stucco through the second floor. Original sash windows remain in numbers 16, 17, 19, and 20; number 15 to the second floor and attic; number 18 to the first, second and attic floors; number 21 to all but the attic; and numbers 22-23 to all but the ground floor. All first-floor windows have margin lights. Segmental-arched dormers are present on numbers 16-17, 19-20, 22-23, and 25. Stacks are located within the party walls. The interior has not been inspected, but railings to stairs and areas remain. The terrace forms a group with numbers 1-14 Portland Place.
