Description

Numbers 237, 239, and 241, together with their attached handrails, are a group of three early 19th-century terraced houses. They are built of brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a parapeted roof. Each house has three storeys over a basement, and originally contained two windows. The basement openings are segmental-arched, with keyed lintels. The first-floor openings are round-arched. An entrance is located to the left of each house, featuring a plain fanlight and jambs treated as fluted quarter columns; the window to the right of the entrance is set within a round-arched recess. A springing band connects all ground-floor openings, and a storey band separates the ground and first floors. The first-floor windows are floor-to-ceiling in height and are each accompanied by a cast-iron balcony in a Greek Revival style. Upper-floor windows have gauged brick lintels. An entablature with a projecting cornice runs along all three houses, although it has been significantly altered, and survives intact only at Number 241. The window sashes are of the original design: 4x8 to the basement; 8x8 to the ground floor, with the head of the window at Number 239 having Gothic glazing; 6x6 to the first floor, which are rebuilt; and 6x6 to the second floor of Number 239, which appear to be original. Party wall stacks are visible. The interior of the properties was not inspected. The attached handrails serve the steps to the front entrances. These houses form a group with Numbers 223-233 (odd) and 235 Queen’s Road.
