Description

Nos. 93 and 95 on Borough High Street are a pair of houses that were later used as hop merchants' offices and are now combined into one office. They date from the early to mid-18th century, with some parts of the facade rebuilt in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick with stone and brick dressings, topped by a slate mansard roof featuring flat-roofed dormers behind a plain brick parapet. It has three storeys and an attic, arranged in four unequal bays with a 2:2 configuration.

The late 19th-century shop front includes an off-centre doorcase with a pediment and elaborate scrolled brackets, while the moulded cornice ends in capitals of corner pilasters. The windows on either side have been replaced, with the left window recessed under a round arch and the right under an elliptical arch. The upper floors feature horned sash windows with glazing bars set beneath painted, gauged-brick arches, and there are plain brick string courses above. A moulded sill band is present above the first-floor windows.

Inside, there is part of an 18th-century closed string staircase with square newels and rails that are moulded on the outer edge. The staircase features ball finials and pendants, turned balusters, and a bottom newel designed in the form of a Greek Cross with four attached half-balusters. The interior was reordered in the 20th century.
