Description

No. 38 Borough High Street is a house with a shop on the ground floor, now used as offices. It dates from the early 18th century, likely between 1716 and 1724, and underwent alterations in 1860-1862 and again in the late 20th century, with the rear largely rebuilt. The building is constructed of yellow brick with red brick dressings and features a steeply pitched slate roof with dormers behind a rebuilt brick parapet. It has three storeys and an attic, arranged in three bays. The ground floor has doors on the left and right flanking a triple sash window with glazing bars. The upper floors are asymmetrical, reflecting the position of a former passage leading to a yard at the rear. The first-floor has sash windows with glazing bars set in nearly flush frames, topped with flat, gauged-brick arches, and there is a blind, narrow opening under a similar arch to the right. The second floor has similar windows and a blind opening, but the windows have been fitted with rebuilt brick arches. A stuccoed band runs along the first floor, while a plain brick band is present at the second floor. Inside, the first-floor front room features late 18th-century to early 19th-century details that were reportedly restored after refurbishment, including an alcove to the left of the fireplace, fluted architraves, and a garlanded frieze.
