Description
No. 42 High Street is a house with a shop, now used as a shop and offices. It has an early 19th-century front that possibly incorporates an 18th-century core. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and is colourwashed, featuring a double Roman clay tiled roof between coped gables and brick chimney stacks.
The exterior consists of three storeys and two bays. The ground floor has a later 20th-century shop front that spans the entire width, with multiple display windows and a deep fascia. There are two doorways set in a deep recess to the right. Above the shop front, the upper floors have sash windows in plain openings, each with gauged brick flat arch heads that include keystones. The first floor has 16-pane windows, while the second floor has 12-pane windows. The building is topped with a moulded cornice and a tall plain parapet with simple coping.
Inside, the ground floor has been completely modified, but some earlier features remain on the upper floors. These include a three-light casement window at the rear of the first floor, likely from the 18th century, a mid-19th-century staircase leading from the first to the second floor, some 18th-century panelling and a window seat, as well as a 19th-century cast-iron fireplace in a front office on the second floor. The roof is not accessible.
