Description
No. 46 High Street is a house over a shop, now functioning as a café, built around 1910. The building features faience tiles and a double Roman clay tile roof, along with brick chimney stacks.
The exterior consists of two storeys with attics in twin gables and has two bays. The shop front is mostly original and is set beneath a very wide elliptical arch, which includes a full-width fanlight with leaded rectangular panes and some bullion glass, all in bronzed frames. There is a central oak glazed door, and to the right, there is a part-glazed door leading to the upper floors. On the first floor, there are a pair of curved four-light leaded oriel windows, each supported by a single scroll bracket and featuring cornices beneath flat roofs. Small leaded single-light windows are present in the gables, along with ornamental gutter boxes and downpipes on either side. A wrought iron bracket and hanging sign are located between the oriel windows, and the gables have faience copings with a moulded edge.
The interior of the ground floor is consistent with the early 20th-century date, while the first floor and attics have not been inspected. This building is listed as a good and relatively unaltered example of its type, sympathetic to and continuing the historic interest of the street. It is recognized as a fine example of an early 20th-century commercial property with Art Nouveau influences.
