Description
No. 52 High Street is a house with a shop, now used as offices with a shop underneath, dating from around 1800. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings, all covered in a colourwash, and the roof is not visible.
The exterior features three storeys and two bays. The ground floor has a mid-20th century shop front with a deep angled fascia and two doors set in deep splayed recesses on the left. The first floor contains two-light casement windows with a full-width toplight, while the second floor has 12-pane sash windows, all positioned under five voussoir flat arches. The coping on the wall appears to be a remnant of a cornice from a higher parapet. There is a bracket for a hanging sign located between the second-floor windows. The rear elevation has one 12-pane sash window, and the throughway is stone paved with a stone gutter.
Inside, the ground floor has been modified, with the stairs relocated, but a cast-iron column supporting a cross-beam has been retained. The front room on the first floor features a ceiling cornice and a 19th-century fireplace. The stairs leading to the second floor still have some 19th-century balustrading, and there are some second-floor doors that reflect the c1800 style.
