Description
38 High Street is a mid-19th century house that has been converted into a shop, with alterations made to the front in the 20th century. It is constructed of Bath stone ashlar and features a hipped Welsh slate roof behind a high parapet, with a rendered brick chimney stack.
The building has three storeys and two bays. The ground floor has a later 20th-century shop front that spans the entire width, flanked by two plain pilasters. Above this, there is a cornice and parapet, with central double doors set in an angled recess and a deep fascia beneath a timber cornice. The first floor contains large 12-pane sash windows with architraves and flat hoods above, while the second floor has 9-pane sash windows with architraves only.
The side elevation facing Union Street is rendered and colourwashed, featuring a vehicle entrance in the first bay and a 12-pane sash window in the second bay on the ground floor, with another lower window now blind. The upper floors mostly have 12-pane sash windows in six random bays, some of which have been modified, along with some 20th-century casements and steel windows. The rear gable is plain and rendered.
Inside, the ground floor has been completely modernised. The basement features a series of brick arched vaults supported by cast-iron bearers. The first floor has been stripped of many original features, while the second floor retains 19th-century partitions and doorways, two mid-19th-century fireplaces, and a well-crafted cupboard unit.
