Description
41 High Street is a shop building from the late 18th century, constructed with Doulting ashlar stonework. The roof is not visible behind a parapet. The building has three storeys and three bays, featuring rusticated pilasters, a heavily moulded cornice, and a plain parapet. The ground floor has been adapted with a 1930s shop front, which includes pairs of double doors set in a recess to the right and a very deep fascia.
On the first floor, there are sash windows in plain openings, with 16 panes in the first and third bays, and a composite window of 4+12+4 panes in the centre bay. The second floor features semicircular recessed panels in the outer bays, each containing 20-pane sash windows, with moulded sills and additional recessed panels beneath the windows. The centre bay has an oriel window supported by an ogee corbelled stone base, consisting of 4+12+4 pane sash units, topped with a reeded decorative frieze under the cornice of a flat roof.
Inside, all floors have been modified, but the shop retains a 1930s panelled ceiling that reflects the Woolworth house style. The attic may have historical interest, but it is not accessible. This building showcases a fine late 18th-century commercial facade.
