Description
No. 37 High Street is a house with a shop, built around 1820 to 1840. It features an ashlar facade with red brick sides and has a brick chimney stack. The building is three storeys high and has two bays. It has panelled end pilasters, a band course between the upper floors, a moulded cornice, and a simple parapet with a raised central panel. The ground floor has been modified for a shop and features a plain design with a doorway on the left, set in a stone surround with a deep fascia under a slim moulding or sill band. The upper floors contain sash windows in plain openings, with 15-pane windows on the first floor and 9-pane windows on the second floor. There are additional sash windows in the brick wall that returns to Guard House Lane. The interior of the ground floor has been adapted for commercial use, while the flat above has not been inspected. Historically, this building was formerly known as St Christopher's Inn and later the Somerset Inn. The property ownership extended along Guard House Lane to South Street at the rear and included a stables yard.
