Description
31 High Street is a house with a shop, built in the early 19th century. It features Doulting ashlar stonework and has a roof that is not visible behind a tall parapet, along with brick chimney stacks. The building has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys high with three bays.
The exterior includes panelled pilasters, a deep moulded cornice, and a plain parapet. The ground floor has a later 20th-century shop front, which features a pair of doors in a central angled recess and lacks a traditional fascia. Above this, there are plain openings with sash windows: 12-pane windows on the first floor and 9-pane windows on the second floor, with the central upper window being a dummy. A modern projecting sign is located between the second and third bays on the first floor.
Inside, the ground floor has been completely remodelled for the shop, but the first floor retains some original features. The front rooms have ceiling cornices and Regency window surrounds with shutters. The stairs leading from the first to the second floor are of early 19th-century design and arranged on a curved plan. Original partitions and doors are present on the second floor, along with a mid-19th-century fireplace in the east room and a 12-pane Yorkshire horizontal sash window at the rear.
