Description

This is a late 18th-century house with a shop, later converted into a shop with flats above. The building incorporates some fragments from the 16th century. The front is rendered and colourwashed, with a clay pantiled roof behind a parapet, and a brick chimney stack.

The exterior is three storeys high and has two bays. The ground floor has a modern shop front with double doors recessed to the right, a plain rendered fascia, and surround. The first floor features two large composite sash windows in moulded eared architraves, each with a 5+15+5 pane arrangement. The centre panes of these windows have semicircular heads and some radial bars in the top tier. The second floor has five plain sash windows in plain surrounds, topped by a shallow cornice and parapet. A lead stackhead and downpipe are visible on the left side.

The return west elevation to Guard House Lane has a plinth and is plain rendered. It contains two small lancet windows and a casement window on the first floor, and a sash window and a casement window on the second floor. The rear wall is rendered and has steel sash windows, with five small gables and a 20th-century addition.

The ground floor interior has been cleared for the shop and lacks historic features. The upper floors are partly accessible, including a late 18th-century dog-leg staircase with turned balusters, rectangular newels, a moulded handrail, and a solid string. A 4-centred stone arch with chamfer sits within the rear wall at the first floor level, leading to a recess. The ceiling in this area features four painted roundels, including one dated 'W 1885'.
