Description

No. 43 High Street is a house with a shop, possibly containing some 17th-century elements, but featuring an earlier 20th-century facade. The building has a rendered exterior over timber framing, with false ashlar joints that are scribed on, and is colourwashed. It has a hipped double Roman clay tiled roof that runs at right angles to the road, positioned behind a parapet. The structure has a right-angle plan.

The exterior is two storeys high and consists of two bays. The ground floor features a 1960s shop front, which includes a mosaic pilaster, a deep fascia, and a central doorway. Above this, there are two 4-pane sash windows with plain surrounds, and between them is a mid-20th-century electric clock. The long rear wing of the building includes one early 19th-century 16-pane sash window, although the roof of the wing has been rebuilt.

Inside, the ground floor has been altered to accommodate the shop. The upper floor has low ceilings and features some plank ledged doors. The exposed feet of what might be collar trusses can be seen, with wall posts at each end; the western side has a jowelled head. On the landing, one crossbeam is present with chamfers but lacks run-out stops.
