Description
No. 23 High Street is a house with a shop, dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings, all of which are colourwashed, and the roof is not visible behind the parapet. The building has a right-angle plan and stands three storeys high with a single bay.
The exterior features a plain mid-20th century shop front on the ground floor, which includes a fairly deep fascia and a doorway on the left. On the first floor, there is a tripartite sash window with 4+12+4 square panes, apparently under a timber lintel. The second floor has a 12-pane sash window in a plain opening, complete with a stone sill and a gauged brick flat arch, set beneath a moulded stone cornice and a plain parapet.
Inside, the layout consists of a long narrow two-room space with a central timber winder staircase, although only some stick balusters remain, and there are no original details visible. The roof covering is reputed to have been replaced in 1992.
