Description
No. 11 High Street is a house that now serves as an office over a shop, and it was formerly known as the Catherine Wheel Inn. It dates from the 16th or 17th century but underwent significant restructuring in the mid-20th century. The building is reputed to include fragments from a structure dating back to 1414.
The exterior features three storeys and two bays. The ground floor has a plain three-unit display window with a shallow fascia above it. The first floor shows traces of mouldings on the sill beam that supports the jetty, while the second floor is plain. Both floors are fitted with three-light timber casement windows that have rectangular leaded lights, and there is a simple parapet at the top.
Inside, there are some chamfered beams at the first floor level, but the interior has been completely rebuilt. Despite the extensive alterations, the building is significant for its early origins and contributes to the character of the medieval town.
