Description
This building, located at 17 High Street in Wells, is a mid-19th century house with a shop. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings, all of which have been colourwashed. The roof is not visible due to a parapet.
The exterior features three storeys and two bays. It has a moulded cornice with a plain parapet. The ground floor includes a plain three-unit display window with a tiled stall riser set in a rendered surround. Above this, there are sash windows: a 12-pane window on the first floor and a 9-pane window on the second floor, all in plain openings with stone sills and gauged brick flat arches.
Inside, the ground floor has been completely modified to accommodate the shop, and much of the first floor has been stripped. There is an early 19th-century staircase leading to the second floor, which has curved winders at the base. On the second floor, there are some 19th-century doors and partitions, as well as blocked fireplaces. The rear of the building has 20th-century extensions, mostly two storeys high, with flat roofs.
