Description
No. 28 Borough High Street is a bank and offices built in the late 19th century. The building features brick in Flemish bond with stone and has a hipped slate roof. It stands three storeys tall with pedimented dormers above a basement. The exterior displays an Italianate style, with a five-window range facing Borough High Street and a curved, rebated corner at the northern edge of the triangular block. There is an eight-window range along Southwark Street, with the westernmost window curving towards the rear. The ground and first-floor openings are flat-arched, and the basement has a plinth of banded rustication. The ground floor is divided into bays by panelled piers that are topped with acanthus brackets, and there is an entablature above featuring a panelled frieze and cornice, except at the corner. The corner openings are tripartite. The first and second floors have vermiculated quoin strips at the rebated range, with a single quoin strip at the corner with the alley. First-floor windows are set in architraves with flush surrounds and topped by cornices on projecting brackets. The curved range features a pediment, and the architrave is eared and shouldered. A balustrade adorns the roof, and there is a pedimented dormer. The interior has not been inspected.
