Description
This building comprises two banks, located on Borough High Street. Constructed between 1862 and 1863, it was designed by Frederic Chancellor for the London and County Bank. It is built of yellow brick with Portland stone dressings and a slate roof. The architectural style is Mannerist, reminiscent of a palazzo.
The building has a rectangular plan and four main storeys plus an attic, with a six-window facade to the east. The design features raised pilasters which continue as pedimented chimney stacks. The ground floor is distinguished by panelled double doors, flanked by narrow windows, all set within keyed segmental-arched marble architraves with blocked jambs. Similar keyed architraves are found on the ground-floor windows, each adorned with classical masks as keystones, and blocked piers. The upper floors contain plate-glass sash windows. The tripartite window on the right-hand bay is set in a blocked architrave with a bracketed open pediment. The second-floor windows have square-headed architraves, while those on the third floor are set within keyed segmental-arched lugged architraves and tall keystones connecting to the sills of the third-floor windows. A plain blocking course sits beneath a modillioned cornice, topped by a pedimented dormer with a tripartite window. A similar arrangement of features is present on the south and west elevations, the latter of which includes a two-storey, two-bay range attached to the north. The interior has not been inspected.
