Description
No. 40 Borough High Street is a house with a ground floor shop, now used as offices. It dates from the early to mid-18th century and was refurbished in 1991. The building is constructed of multi-coloured stock brick with red brick dressings and features a renewed tiled mansard roof with dormers behind a parapet. It has three storeys and an attic, with two bays. The ground floor has a shop front with an entrance to the left. The first and second floors have sash windows with glazing bars, which are set under flat, gauged-brick arches. There is a stucco band at the first floor and a plain brick band at the second floor.
Inside, there is a pitch pine closed string staircase with a square newel and rail, featuring twisted and tapering balusters on vases. The staircase wall has plain panelling, which has been copied where it is missing. The first-floor front room includes fielded panelling and a cupboard to the right of the fireplace with a reeded architrave and rosettes at the corners. There is a moulded chair rail and cornice, and to the left, an alcove with a leaf key, shaped shelves, and a coved ceiling painted with a sun and ram's head. The building was under scaffolding and being refurbished at the time of the survey.
