Description
91 Borough High Street is a terraced house that was later converted into an inn. It dates from the 18th century and features a mid-Victorian shop front. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with rubbed brick dressings and moulded brick storey bands at the second and third floors. The roof is parapeted, and the structure has three storeys and an attic, with a two-window range. All openings are flat-arched, with those on the upper floors having gauged brick lintels and 6x6 sash windows that are of an authentic design. The shop front includes pilasters on the party walls with anthemion capitals, and plain pilasters that frame a shallow shop front bay and an entrance to the left.
Inside, published sources note many original features, including pine panelling on the first, second, and third floors. There is an open-well staircase located at the rear, in the northeast corner, with upper flights from the 18th century that have a moulded handrail leading to the first and second floors. The staircase has three balusters per step and newels that are carved to resemble fluted Doric columns. Historically, in the mid-18th century, the building was known as the Bell and Bear Inn.
