Description

No. 3 Southwark Street is a warehouse built between 1864 and 1865. It is constructed of stock brick with stucco dressings and features a slate mansard roof with dormers set back behind a parapet. The building has a curving corner plan and consists of four storeys above a basement, with a total of eight windows, including a return section with three windows and a hoist range. Designed in the Italianate style, it has round-headed windows that create a continuous arcade on each storey. Most of the window openings, except for the ground floor where the lower parts have been filled with plate glass, retain their original glazing, which includes casements with fixed-arched lights above. All three doors date from the 20th century. The openings of the hoist range, along with the iron bracket and pulley, and the hatch of the topmost doorway, are all original features. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this building is significant as one of the first constructed on Southwark Street, serving as an important 'gateway' to the commercial thoroughfare developed by the Metropolitan Board of Works to connect London Bridge and Blackfriars. Southwark Street was the Board's first town-planning project, officially opened in its entirety in 1864. No. 3 is depicted in a view of the street published in the "Illustrated London News" on 18 February 1865.
