Description

This is a late 17th or early 18th century house, later used as offices, which was refaced in the mid-19th century and subsequently altered in the 20th century. The building is constructed of stock brick with a tiled roof and a flat-roofed dormer. It is three storeys high with an attic, and one bay wide. A stack is located on the left side. The original gable is visible at the rear, but the fenestration has been altered. A 20th-century shop front occupies the ground floor. The first and second floors feature 20th-century metal casement windows, which replaced 19th-century tripartite sash windows, and sit under rebuilt brick arches.

The interior contains a staircase extending from the first floor, with an ovolo-moulded closed string, square-sectioned rail, newel with a ball finial and pendants, urn-shaped balusters, which have been removed, stripped, and replaced. Fireplaces are blocked but are thought to remain behind 20th-century boarding. Original two-panelled doors are present; those at the front have H-hinges, while those at the rear have HL-hinges. A kitchen range is situated in the rear room of the first floor. No. 55 forms a group with No. 53.
