Description
No. 23 High Street is a savings bank and offices built in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of rendered and colourwashed brick with a slate roof and stands three storeys tall, featuring five bays. The central three bays project outward. The ground floor has shopfronts divided into five bays, with paired timber pilasters between each bay. An iron balcony extends across the first floor, which features windows that are actually French doors. The central three doors are topped with pediments supported by consoles, although the doors have been renewed. There is a platband below the second-floor windows, which have been replaced with fixed types. The building has a timber eaves cornice and a hipped roof with gable-end stacks. At the rear, there is a very large brick extension of two to three storeys that includes a first-floor Venetian window and a datestone indicating the year 1833.
