Description
No. 1 Market Place is a former bank built in the late 19th century, with some alterations made in the mid-20th century. The building is constructed of ashlar stone, featuring a granite plinth and doorcase, ashlar dressings, and a slate mansard roof. It is designed in the Baroque Revival style and has a single ridge and two gable stacks, all of which are coped and have cornices. The structure stands three storeys tall, plus attics, and is arranged in a five by four bay layout, positioned on a corner site with an angled entrance bay.
The entrance bay is topped with a lead dome and stone finial, featuring a doorcase adorned with a dentillated cornice and heavily rusticated Doric columns, which frame a cross panelled double door. Above the entrance, there is a round-arched recess with a hood supported by pilasters, and a plain sash window with a bracketed sill and scroll keystone above that. Further up, another round-arched window with a panelled surround and keystone is present.
On the left side facing Church Street, the lower two floors are highlighted by Doric half-columns on tall rusticated pedestals. This side features five plain sash windows with moulded surrounds and keyblocks, along with aprons decorated with festoons. The ground floor has round-arched single-pane windows with fanlights, rusticated voussoirs, and scroll keystones. The second floor contains five plain sash windows with small cornices, separated by panelled pilasters. The attic level includes four shouldered round-headed dormers with two-light glazing bar casements.
The right side facing Market Place has three bays designed in the same style, with two dormers in the attic. To the right, there is a slightly projecting entrance bay with a recessed doorway topped by a scroll keystone. Above this doorway is a semicircular window with rusticated voussoirs, followed by a plain sash window with a keyblock and apron, set beneath a triangular pediment. Above that, another plain sash window with a moulded surround and segmental pediment is located under a stepped parapet.
