Description
The Swan Hotel is a hotel located on Church Street in Mansfield. It dates back to around 1584 and was remodelled in the 18th century, with an addition made around 1870. The building underwent restoration and further remodelling around 1990. The front is rendered and painted, featuring stone dressings that are mostly renewed, and it has plain tile roofs.
The 19th-century addition on the left has coped gables and two coped stone gable stacks. The hotel has a plinth, and the windows are primarily renewed glazing bar sashes with projecting rendered surrounds. The main block, which has double gables and stands three storeys plus attics, features a four-window range of 12-pane sashes, with four similar sashes above. Each gable has an unequally hung 9-pane sash. To the right, there is a painted stone doorcase with Ionic columns and pilasters, featuring a round-arched opening with a keystone and voussoirs, along with a reset datestone from 1584 and a 20th-century door.
To the left, there are two 12-pane windows, and above these, there is a full-width glazed canopy supported by cast-iron brackets. The slightly recessed addition on the left is two storeys plus attics, with a three-window range of 12-pane sashes and two through-eaves dormers with coped gables, each containing a renewed 2-light stone mullioned casement. Below this addition, there are three round-arched windows with 2-light casements and fanlights.
