Description

The George Hotel is a hotel located on Station Street in Swaffham. It was originally built in the early 18th century, with the main range facing the street added around 1860, and extensions made in 1979 and between 1988 and 1989. The building is constructed of red brick, with the front rendered and whitewashed, and features slate and pantiled roofs.

The 19th-century facade, which faces southwest, is two storeys tall with a dormer attic and has an irregular five-window arrangement. The ground floor is rusticated, and there is a double-leaf half-glazed door to the right of the centre, framed by a plain doorcase that rises to a pediment. The windows are 2/2 horned sashes of various sizes; those on the ground floor have rendered and painted gauged arches, while the first-floor windows have raised surrounds and hoods. There are five through-eaves dormers with open segmental pediments adorned with shell motifs, also featuring 2/2 horned sashes. The roof is gabled, with internal gable-end stacks on the north and south sides.

To the left of the main building is an 18th-century block, which has had its facade rebuilt in the 20th century using stretcher-bond red brick. This block is also two storeys tall with a five-window range and features 6/6 sashes, with the upper floor windows lacking horns. It has a gabled roof and an internal gable-end stack to the north. The rear of this block is made of early 18th-century brick and includes one two-light cross-casement window.

Inside, there is a cast-iron staircase from the 19th century.
