Description

The Morritt Arms Hotel is a hotel that likely dates from the 18th century and was enlarged and remodeled in the early 20th century. It is constructed from squared stone with cut quoins and dressings, featuring an ashlar porch. The main block has a concrete tile roof, while the east wing has stone slates. The main block is three storeys high with seven symmetrical bays. It has a central prostyle porch supported by paired Tuscan columns, leading to a six-panel door. The lower floors have 12-pane sash windows, and the upper floors have 9-pane sashes. The building has coped gables on moulded kneelers and end stacks.

To the left, slightly set back, is a two-storey l-bay end of the east wing, which has 12-pane sashes. The left return of the wing has four bays, featuring a glazed door with a plain overlight and similar sash windows, topped with a hip-ended roof. At the rear of the wing, there is a bow window with a moulded cornice. All openings are framed with architraves, many of which incorporate re-used 18th-century materials.

Inside, the hotel features largely early 20th-century elements, including an open-well stair with stick balusters, panelled newels, and a moulded handrail, as well as Tudor-style fireplaces. A flat-roofed ballroom extension from the 1930s at the rear of the main block and attached outbuildings to the southwest are not of interest.
