Description
East Lodge to Rokeby Park is a gate lodge built in the early 19th century for J.B.S. Morritt. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and features a 20th-century felted roof with a brick chimney. It is designed in the Greek Revival style, characterized by a pedimented gable front. There are two steps leading up to a Greek Doric distyle-in-antis porch that encloses a six-panel door, which has raised blocks where the rails meet the stiles, all set within a panelled stone surround. The eaves are supported by block corbels. A small ridge stack is present on the roof.
The two-bay returns display broad recesses with renewed nine-pane sash windows in panelled surrounds, and there is a central domed niche that holds a moulded stone urn. At the rear, there is a similar door flanked by two recesses with small inserted windows.
Historically, the artist J.S. Cotman mentioned in a letter that he had made suggestions to Mr. Morritt regarding the lodges, which Morritt intended to take.
